Benefits of Biofeedback

At Absolute Wellness Center, we view the body as a complex and integrated system where physical, mental, and chemical stressors play a vital role in one's ability to gain and maintain overall health and well-being.  We integrate many forms of healthcare in Linn Creek with the intent of bringing harmony and balance to the nervous system which helps maximize your optimum health potential.  One of the techniques we utilize is Biofeedback.

What is Biofeedback?

Biofeedback is a treatment technique in which you are trained to improve your health by using signals from your own body.  Physical therapists use biofeedback to help stroke victims regain movement in paralyzed muscles. Psychologists use it to help tense and anxious clients learn to relax. Specialists in many different fields use biofeedback to help their patients cope with pain.

Chances are, you have used biofeedback yourself. You've used it if you have ever taken your temperature or stepped on a scale. The thermometer tells you whether you're running a fever, the scale whether you've gained weight. Both devices "feed back" information about your body's condition. Armed with this information, you can take steps you've learned to improve the condition. When you're running a fever, you go to bed and drink plenty of fluids. When you've gained weight, you resolve to eat less and sometimes you do.

Clinicians and patients can use biofeedback machines to detect their internal bodily functions with a greater sensitivity than a person can alone.  These machines pick up signals from the body and translate them into a form the patient can detect, for example, triggering a flashing light or beeper.  The biofeedback trainee monitors his performance and when the light flashes or the beeper beeps too often, the trainee makes internal adjustments which alter the signals.  The clinician or therapist acts as a coach, setting goals and giving tips on how to improve performance.  We use the NeuroInfiniti biofeedback technology in our office at the Lake of the Ozarks to assist our clients in retraining their nervous systems to be able to adapt and respond as it should which helps improve their overall health potential.

How does Biofeedback work?

Most patients who benefit from biofeedback are trained to relax and modify their behavior.  Most scientists believe that relaxation is a key component in biofeedback treatment of many disorders, particularly those brought on or made worse by stress.  Stress arouses certain physical responses which are controlled by the central nervous system, the network of nerve tissues that help prepare the body for "fight or flight."

Biofeedback is often aimed at changing habitual reactions to stress that cause pain or disease.  Many clinicians believe their patients and clients have forgotten how to relax.  Feedback of physical responses such as skin temperature and muscle tension provide information to help patients recognize a relaxed state.  The feedback signal may also act as a kind of reward for reducing tension.  For the treatment of patients with paralyzed or spastic muscles, biofeedback helps them practice exercises that can help them regain use of their muscles by showing that some parts of their affected limbs remain active.

Benefits of Biofeedback

Biofeedback can help many different conditions from headaches and anxiety to epilepsy and chronic pain.  By helping you identify tight or painful muscles and then learning how to relax those muscles, biofeedback may help relieve pain and discomfort.  In addition to relieving muscle tension, biofeedback can also be used to relieve stress.  This makes it a great treatment for headaches and anxiety because both of these conditions are made worse with stress.  For example, biofeedback lets you become more aware of your body's responses when you are stressed and anxious so you can learn how to control those responses.  Biofeedback has also been used in the treatment of irritable bowel syndrome, hot flashes, high blood pressure, and nausea and vomiting associated with chemotherapy.  Although some of these conditions require other treatment or medications, biofeedback on its own does not require medication.  It helps your body relax, destress, and perform at its optimal level.
