Easy Ways to Reduce Chemicals In Your Home

At Absolute Wellness Center, we care about your entire health journey. This can start with learning about your nervous system and how chiropractic at the Lake of the Ozarks works to aid in healing. Yet, as you go through this journey of healing, it can very easily start in one place, and work its way through your entire life by changing the way you look at the food you eat to the chemicals that you use in your home. It’s not a surprise to know that the chemicals you once thought were cleaning your home turn out to be part of what is causing you to feel tired, anxious, or even one of the big culprits in the pain that you feel. Here are a few ways that you can reduce the use of chemicals in your home to help your entire family feel great!

Filter Your Water

Did you know that 60% of our bodies are water? Drinking plenty of water can be incredibly beneficial for your health, but did you also know that water can contain many different types of contaminants? Where you get your drinking water can have a huge effect on what’s in it, so it’s important to do your research. Eliminating bottled water is one of the first and easiest steps to changing your water habits and making healthier steps for your family. Drinking from plastic bottles can be a huge source of chemical contaminant in your home, but that is only the beginning. According to an article by WebMD, bottled water is regulated by the FDA which is not required to produce reports on what contaminants are found in their water, unlike tap water, which is regulated by the EPA.

Solution:
Filter your water! You can find some great solutions that range from cost-effective to extremely high-tech on the market right now. You can get a water filter system that sits on your counter or you can get one that hooks into your home water system and cleans all of your water, including the water that you shower in.

Check Your Cooking Utensils

Your cooking utensils can be a huge source of chemicals in a home, and what’s worse is that they are dealing directly with your food. Do you have cooking pans with any non-stick coatings? Depending on what they are made from, you may want to be careful with how you use them. Many nonstick coatings and chemicals can accumulate in the body.

Solution:
The most obvious solution would be to replace your pans with stainless steel or cast iron, but this can be incredibly costly right off the bat. If you need to keep your nonstick pans around for a while, you can refrain from preheating your pans on high, and use the lowest possible temperature to cook your food. This will help keep the chemical transfer to a minimum.

Be Aware of Your Cleaning Products

It’s pretty obvious that the cleaning products that are so common are “chemicals” - they even say so on the bottle. Aren’t those chemicals important for getting your home clean and removing germs? There are many non-toxic cleaning products on the market today, and with a little research, you can find some great alternatives for your family!

Solution:
Keep your eyes peeled for “green” cleaners that don’t contain chlorine or ammonia. If they say “petroleum-free,” “biodegradable,” or “phosphate-free” you’ve hit the healthy jackpot! Another solution is to make many of your cleaners for yourself. You can have a powerful cleaning arsenal with some vinegar, baking soda, and hydrogen peroxide. There are plenty of DIY recipes on the internet that can get you started.

Eat Healthy

It’s no surprise that this would make the list. Organic options are becoming more and more prevalent in the grocery store, and these options are better for your body because there are much stricter rules in regards to the chemicals and pesticides that are (or are not) used on them. There are even studies that show organic fruits and vegetables are shown to have 25% higher levels of nutrients over their conventional counterparts.

Solution:
Organic food may be better for you, but you also pay the price for it as well. You can help save a bit of money on ingredients by buying produce in season. You can also look up lists like the Dirty Dozen to show which produce you get by with buying generic and which you really need to get organic. Some produce can absorb more pesticides than others (berries are one), so if you’re going to splurge on something, splurge on those!
