Ways to Boost Your Immune System This Winter
The temperatures are getting low this week, as it to remind us that winter is just a few weeks away. While sickness and flu don’t just come around in winter, it’s certainly more prevalent during the next few months. Staying healthy and building your immune system can be key ways to help keep your family healthy over the next few months, and Absolute Wellness Center is here to support you in that. Here are a few ways you can boost your immune system and help your family stay healthy.
Eat Right
It shouldn’t be a surprise that what you eat can help your bodyguard against infections. Making sure that you are getting plenty of fruits and vegetables is the first place to start. These vitamin-packed superfoods are great at building up your body and helping it fight against viruses it encounters. Another hard, but beneficial step would be cutting out or limiting sugar. Sugar is incredibly addictive, but it’s also a huge culprit in lowering your immune system. It shouldn’t surprise you that the biggest months for sickness are also placed right in between Halloween, Christmas, New Year’s Valentine’s Day, and Easter. If you are concerned about your diet, we provide nutritional counseling at the Lake of the Ozarks and we also have a large supply of supplements to help.Exercise Regularly
Getting plenty of exercise is crucial to healthy living. It can help improve your heart health, lower blood pressure, control body weight, and protect against a variety of diseases. The same way a healthy diet can help guard against infection, exercise can also contribute to general good health. If you don’t have a form of exercise that you like, try to choose something that you’ll find it easy to stick with. Yoga can be beneficial because it can be done indoors or out depending on the weather, and can also help promote healthy breathing, stretching, and a calm mind.Get Plenty of Sleep
Sleep deprivation is not only wildly common these days, but it’s also incredibly serious. Lack of sleep can have a huge impact on your immune system, and there are studies to prove it. If you aren’t getting quality sleep or enough of it, you are more likely to get sick after being exposed to a virus, even something as simple as a common cold virus. Lack of sleep can also affect how fast you recover if you do get sick. An adult should be aiming for 7-9 hours of sleep each night.Wash Your Hands
Washing your hands is the easiest way to help guard against infection. You can stop it before it ever enters your body by simply taking a few moments to carefully wash your hands. Start with warm or cold running water, use a pump of soap (it doesn’t have to be antibacterial, in fact, studies show that it shouldn’t be regularly), and make sure that you rub your hands together vigorously for at least 20 seconds. It may feel juvenile, but you can sing Happy Birthday from beginning to end twice. Rinse your hands well and then dry using a clean towel or air dry them. If soap and water are not available, you can use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer. However, studies are showing that soap and water do the trick better than anything else.Reduce Stress
Stress can play a vital role in your immune system. The role of your mind and body working together are pivotal. Many researchers don’t feel that short-lived stress plays as much of a role on your immune system as chronic stress does, we know how stress can affect your nervous system, and in the end, your health. If your body doesn’t know how to come off of those stressful moments, you may actually be walking around stressed 24/7. You can check out our recent blog about stress and massage therapy to learn more about how it can affect your body. Just remember that stress can severely impact many aspects of your body, including your immune system. Find ways to relax, and purposefully give your body the space it needs to calm down and get centered.Get Adjusted!
Did you know that getting adjusted can also help improve your immune system? We have many customers who have reported less illness after receiving regular adjustments. This is because when you get adjusted you are caring for your nervous system - which is the center of your entire being. Do you need a chiropractic adjustment at the Lake of the Ozarks? We would be glad to schedule an appointment and get you cared for.
