Bad Habits That Hurt Your Back

Your back is strong, it’s up to the task of living every single day with you. But did you know that sometimes you could be hurting your back through regular, daily tasks? This doesn’t include stepping on a crack, by the way 😉. But it does include things like sitting for too long, your diet, or even your sleeping routine. Your Lake of the Ozarks chiropractor wants you to remember a few things as you live your daily life to help keep your spine happy and healthy.

Sitting for Too Long

Did you know that sitting causes 40% more spinal pressure than standing ever does? You can change your habits by getting up to stretch every 30 minutes. This will give your spine the break it needs, and may even help increase your productivity! Set a timer on your phone to go off every 30 minutes, and see how much it helps.

How Is Your Car Seat?

Did you know that Americans spend an average of 17,600 minutes driving each year? That’s almost THREE HUNDRED HOURS. As you can imagine, if the seat of your car is in a bad position, those hours could feel like even longer from a back that is positioned poorly. It’s important to be sitting at a 90º angle, and you want to move the seat so that reaching the wheel AND the pedals isn’t a stretch.

Eliminating Exercise

We probably don’t have to harp on this for too long - you probably hear it everywhere. Skipping out on your workout isn’t just bad for your body, but bad for your back as well. 40% of people cut exercise when they have back pain, but it’s a proven fact that walking, stretching, and yoga and speed healing. Of course, don’t forget that Lake of the Ozarks chiropractic can help as well - but exercise is key!

Overloading Your Load

This doesn’t just apply to school kids with backpacks. If you are filling your briefcase or purse too full, you may be putting unnecessary strain on your back. Heavy bags imbalance the shoulders, which can cause your entire body to be skewed. The max safe weight for a bag is 10% of your body weight.

Eating Poorly

Did you know that clogged arteries are a major back pain culprit? Not to mention that excess weight gain takes a toll on your back. Watching what you eat, combined with a healthy exercise plan can be extremely beneficial for your back, but also your overall health. We offer nutritional counseling at the Lake of the Ozarks, so if you have questions about your dietary needs, we would love to help.

How Old Is Your Mattress?

An old mattress can often be the culprit of back pain. Have you ever stayed over somewhere for the night, and found that the next morning your back was sore? Imagine if you slept on that same mattress for a month? This can be terrible for your spine! A worn out mattress causes your spine to sag. It’s a safe bet to replace it every 5-7 years if you have back pain.

Your Shoes

We have to call them out … high heels. These statement makers can also be back breakers. Your back muscles have to work a lot harder to carry you in heels. If you truly love them and can’t bear to give them up, try adding a cushioned insole and don’t walk long distances.

Built Up Stress

It should come as no surprise that anger and stress can cause muscle tension in the back. Not only that but if you are living in a constant state of stress, your body never gets the opportunity to come off of that hormone and relax and repair. We can speak to you more about this at your first appointment, but we specialize in finding and training your body to handle stress appropriately. This can work WONDERS for your back, which houses your nervous system = the central for your body.

Watching Too Much TV

Watching 15 hours of TV per week can increase your lower back pain by THREE TIMES. Don’t think you watch that much? Just over two hours a day can be causing your body unnecessary problems. Cut your viewing time and stretch during the commercials to help give your back a break.

Ignoring Your Pain

This can hurt you just as much as anything. If you are having back pain, it can get progressively worse when ignored. Maybe you just slept funny, or maybe you have a much bigger issue than a tense neck.
