Do You Need Lab Testing?

You may initially say “no,” but have you really thought about the answer? Several things are happening in your body that you can’t control, and if you don’t know about them, you really can’t fix them. While this does apply to chiropractic at the Lake of the Ozarks, another important thing to watch is your blood work and lab tests. This doesn’t mean you need to get your tests taken every few months, but it does mean that routine blood tests can show you want you are doing right, and what could use some improvement. Here are a few important blood tests that you may want to have completed regularly.

Complete Blood Count

It could be a good idea to occasionally do a routine CBC, complete blood count, which checks for levels of 10 different components of every major cell in your blood. This includes white blood cells, red blood cells, and platelets. If levels are abnormal, it could indicate iron deficiency, infection, heart conditions, or just basic nutritional deficiencies like your vitamins B-6 or B-12.

  • Basic Metabolic Panel
  • This is also known as the BMP, and it will check for certain compounds in your blood.
  • Electrolytes
  • Calcium
  • Glucose
  • Sodium
  • Potassium
  • Carbon Dioxide
  • Chloride
  • Blood Urea Nitrogen (BUN)
  • Creatinine
In many cases, this test can indicate kidney issues, diabetes, or hormone imbalances, but if anything is alarming, there are further tests to really hone in on them.

Complete Metabolic Panel

This is called a CMP and will include measurements of a BMP as well as additional proteins and substances related to your liver function.

  • Albumin
  • Total Protein
  • Alkaline Phosphatase
  • Alanine Aminotransferase
  • Aspertate Aminotransferase
  • Bilirubin

Lipid Panel

This test will check the two types of cholesterol, looking for high-density lipoprotein or low-density lipoprotein. AKA: good and bad cholesterol.

HDL is “good” because it will remove harmful substances from your blood, LDL is “bad” because it can cause plaque and develop in your arteries. This can be a helpful test to perform every so often to let you know how you are doing on your health journey, what changes need to be made, and also show where you are doing well!

Thyroid Panel

These are becoming more and more popular as individuals are realizing the importance of the thyroid, as well as seeing more and more cases of hypo and hyperthyroid. This test can show how well your thyroid is producing and reading to hormones like triiodothyronine (T3), T3 resin uptake (RU), Thyroxine (T4), and thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH). Your thyroid may be small, but it is mighty and imbalances can have quite the effect on your body.

Enzyme Markers

Enzymes are proteins that can help your body achieve certain chemical processes. This can include breaking down food and even clotting your blood. Abnormal enzyme levels can indicate many different conditions, and if anything shows up that is alarming, you can then make a plan of action from there.

Sexually Transmitted Disease Tests

Many of the STDs can be diagnosed using a blood sample, and are often combined with a urine sample as well as others. Blood tests are always accurate however, right after contracting an infection. Some of the infections require that you wait at least a month before a blood test will detect the virus.

Coagulation Panel

A coagulation test will measure how well your blood clots and how long it will take for your blood to clot. Clotting is crucial and helps you stop bleeding after a cut or wound. However, a clot can be deadly when it’s blocking blood flow to your brain, heart, lungs, or in an artery. The coagulation test results can vary but can show underlying conditions that may be important to know about.

DHEA-Sulfate Serum Test

The DHEA hormone comes from your adrenal glands, and this test can measure whether the levels are too high or too low. In men, DHEA and help develop body hair growth, so low levels are not considered normal. In women, high levels can cause what are considered “male traits” like excess body hair, so low levels are normal. Between men and women, many things can be learned from these tests, from type 2 diabetes to PCOS (polycystic ovary syndrome).

C-Reactive Protein Test

The c-reactive protein (CRP) is made by your liver when the tissues of your body are inflamed. High levels can show a possibility of artery inflammation, infection, heart disease, and more.
