10 Things Women Can Do to Get Healthy - Part 2

As seasons change, it’s a great time to re-evaluate your life habits and think about what you want to change or keep the same. Fall is still a few weeks away, but it feels like it’s just around the corner now that kids are going back to school. If you are feeling a little drained from summer shenanigans and late nights, here are a few things that Absolute Wellness Center suggests that you can do to jumpstart your fall with a healthy jolt of energy.

Did you miss out on part 1 of our series? You can view it here.

6. Focus on a Healthy Gut

The gut is becoming a trendy term amongst health circles - but that’s because it’s so important! We’re realizing more and more that so many health issues people experience have a beginning in the gut. Not sure where to start? Studying gut health can take you down a rabbit hole of studying and research, but the basics involve avoiding sugary foods and beverages, taking a high-quality probiotic supplement, and consuming plenty of probiotic-rich foods and drinks like kefir, kimchi, kombucha, and other fermented foods.

7. Consider Your Heart

Think that heart disease only affects men? Think again. 1 out of 3 deaths of women in the United States is attributed to heart disease. However, with some lifestyle changes, you can actually help prevent this. Focusing on a heart-healthy diet based on fruits and vegetables, as well as whole grains, maintaining a healthy weight, reducing sodium, cholesterol, and saturated fats, reducing stress levels, increasing daily activity, and limiting alcohol consumption and smoking habits can all help.

Sound like a lot of work? Just start with one thing and make slow changes.

8. What Are You Putting On Your Skin?

Did you know that your skin is the largest organ in your body? Your skin is porous, and it can absorb whatever you put on it, which means that being aware of the beauty products you are using can be extremely important. Makeup and skincare can be extremely toxic, as well as just made up of chemicals, irritants, endocrine disruptors, and carcinogenic ingredients. There are a few that are the hard-hitters, though.

Parabens: associated with an increased risk of breast cancer
Artificial colors: banned in the European Union due to being carcinogenic
Phthalates: associated with an increased risk of breast cancer, endocrine disruptor, and linked to reproductive birth defects
Sodium Laurel/Laureth Sulfate: skin, lung, and eye irritant
Propylene Glycol: skin irritant

9. Consider Alcohol Consumption

There are studies showing that respectful amounts of alcohol (specific varieties even, like red wine), are actually incredibly beneficial. However, anything that is abused can cause issues, especially when choosing beverages high in sugar. Excessive alcohol consumption is linked to a whole host of diseases like:

  • Heart disease
  • Liver disease
  • Cancer
  • Osteoporosis
  • Pancreatitis
  • Ulcers and gastrointestinal problems
  • Immune system dysfunction
  • Brain damage
  • Malnourishment and vitamin deficiencies

Moderation and respect are key, so while you don’t have to deprive yourself, if you find that you are abusing it, avoiding it can be helpful.

10. Avoid Comparison

The comparison trap is all too real, and something that so many healthy women find themselves battling. Comparing yourself to others doesn’t help your health, wellness, fitness, or self-esteem.

Using others achievements as a source of inspiration and motivation is healthy, but if you find yourself starting to compare yourself to others, it’s time to set some boundaries. Unfollowing people on social media can be an easy way to make changes.
