Fun Facts About the Nervous System
Your nervous system is a HUGE part of your body. It determines how you feel, what you do, how you react to situations. With that in mind, it only makes sense to take a bit of time to look a little deeper and realize what makes this system so incredible. Here at Absolute Wellness Center, we focus on the nervous system’s healing through chiropractic at the Lake of the Ozarks, so we thought it would be interesting to take a look at some fun facts about the nervous system!

1. The average length of the spinal cord measures to about 19 inches, but it holds 10 MILLION neurons! Your spinal cord works together with your brain as well as independently. There are many things controlled by the spinal cord alone, including some reflexes.
2. Your nervous system sends messages, and those are transmitted at incredible rates! The electrical impulses in your nervous system travel at a speed of 180 mph. This allows you to interpret information in the blink of an eye.
3. Did you know that there are more cells in the human brain than human beings on the plant? There are over 100 billion nerve cells or neurons in the human brain, and the current world population stands at about 7.8 billion individuals.
4. The optic nerve carries information from the eyes to the brain so that it can be interpreted. However, the right optic nerve crosses over the left brain and transmits a signal to the left side, while the left optic nerve transmits signals to the right side of the brain. These signals work together to enable your brain to interpret the image formed in the retina.
5. The autonomous nervous system is activated under emergency (or stressful) situations, and it transmits signals to either “fight” or “flight”. It is also activated in normal conditions such as rest and digestion. However, staying in this state for too long is what brings the body stress and makes it more susceptible to disease, which is why we perform neurological chiropractic at the Lake of the Ozarks.
6. In total, there are 43 pairs of nerves in the peripheral nervous system. Out of those 42 pairs of nerves, 12 pairs are connected directly with the brain and 31 pairs are connected to the spinal cord.
7. Did you know that the brain’s structure is not static? It’s constantly changing as it acquires new knowledge. The structure and density of the brain of an infant vary significantly with an adolescent or adult brain. Learning processes contribute to the development of new neuronal connections in your brain. So, the more we learn, the more electrical connections are generated in our brains. The connections help in establishing memory, and the more they are reinforced, the stronger the memory.
